Edgenuity Speed Radar: What It Flags and What Teachers See

Speed Radar is the Edgenuity feature students hear about last and ask about most. Here's what it actually measures, what your teacher sees when it fires, and the parts of the platform it doesn't touch.

What it is

Speed Radar is an Edgenuity feature that flags activities for review when a student moves through them faster than expected. Imagine Learning introduced it alongside a plagiarism checker as part of a broader academic-integrity push.

In the current EdgeEX platform it's calibrated for activities that include video — which tells you what it was built around. Instruction activities are video-first, and video is the part of a course with the most predictable expected duration.

What your teacher sees

Not an alarm. An icon.

A flagged activity shows a Speed Radar icon at the top of the Student Work pane, with a tooltip explaining why it appeared. From there a teacher can:

  • spot-check how quickly the activity was completed;
  • contact you about it;
  • reset the activity from the manage-activity panel, so it has to be done again.

It also appears in the attendance log, and flags feed the consolidated academic integrity report alongside plagiarism and AI-detection alerts.

Why the report matters more than any single flag

A one-off fast completion is ambiguous and teachers know it — students genuinely do skim content they already know, and plenty of activities are shorter than their nominal duration.

The report changes that by aggregating. A cluster of flags reads differently from one, which is the practical reason pacing matters more than any individual activity.

What it doesn't do

Worth being precise, because this feature attracts a lot of speculation:

  • It is not proctoring. No webcam, no screen recording. That's the separate Proctorio integration, which a district has to enable.
  • It doesn't identify a tool. It measures elapsed time against expectation. Any inference beyond that is a human one.
  • It is not currently a general timer across non-video activities in EdgeEX.
  • It doesn't see your other tabs. Timing is timing.

Separately from Speed Radar, it's worth knowing what any web page can observe — because this is the part most students get wrong in the other direction.

A page can tell when you switch away from it. The Page Visibility API (document.hidden, document.visibilityState, the visibilitychange event) and document.hasFocus() are standard browser features that any site can read. What a page can't see is which site you went to.
